Respect teaching profession grow the economy

I am challenging teachers unions....not because they are dormant but because they have been compromised to stop being teachers mouth piece. The trade union leaders are just enriching with the meagre income of the teachers that is already mutilated by the government. The teacher payslip sound attractive but when critically analyzed much is take away in tax. Hospital allowance has been taken away and no quality medical services offered. In total over 1/3 teachers salaries deducted legally and still awaiting further deductions without the their consent. Ask anyone working in. In a SACCO or a bank teachers are leading in loans. Their economic status does not reflect the nobility of the profession.

The status of teachers varies from one country to another. As serious researcher, I have noted a close correlation between teachers respect and economic development in many counties. Let just focus on two countries China and Finland.

China is one of the countries threatening the Dominant of U.S.A is a world super power. According to a new survey, with educators China is outstanding in respecting teaching profession with 50% of respondents from China saying they would probably definitely encourage their children become teachers. In China people compare teachers to Doctors than other professions

Kenya is busy killing the teaching profession and busy busy hiring professions from China to help in economic development. This is a paradox. We are now encouraging neocolonialism. We are benefitting from a country investing heavily on teaching profession while investing all our energy in killing teaching profession. This is a pregnant issue that requires sober minds. Let me tell you why soon U.S.A will no longer be a super power...in supporting teaching profession internationally they are rated number 9th out of the Sampled 21 countries in the world.

Another country doing economically well is Finland. This is a country where teachers are highly valued. The entry qualification to teaching profession are the highest. The selection process set high standards that must be met to enter teaching profession In Kenya the story is the opposite. Teaching is seen as a career for failures in education. The students who get higher grades in K.C.S.E are admitted in other so called " luxurious"professions.

Another good thing to benchmark from Finland is that teachers have autonomy in how they approach curriculum. Their creativity and innovativeness as professionals is highly respected and appreciated. Am a testimony to this. Last year I published four major researches relating to eduction sector as a professional teacher but who bother to study the findings. Teachers as professionals engage in research but no one bother to find out what their professional recommendation is all about. In Kenya we urgently need annual teachers professional conferences to share research finding as professional teachers.

In Finland teachers are ever pushing their intellectual and creative boundaries by continuously engaging in research. This make teachers most trusted profession. Finland has a high reunion rate of professional teachers with 90% compared to other European countries.

Teachers love their job but they feel undervalued, unsupported and unrecognized. OECD's teaching and learning international survey TALIS finds that more than 9 out of 10 teachers are satisfied with their jobs and nearly 8 out of 10 choose the teaching profession again. However, only a third of interviewed teachers believed teaching is a valued profession in society.

Kenya must join the first developing countries by promoting and respecting teaching profession. Teachers are the KEY in today's knowledge economy where good education is an essential foundation for every child 's future success.

Kill teaching profession kill the future of our children and Kenya in general.
